OHMYGOD GAIL SIMONE NEW BATGIRL ALYSIA YEOH SINGAPORE SINGAPORE
I’ve just read new 52!Batgirl #4 and I swear my heart just leapt. okay, so there was a mention of Singapore and laksa a couple of issues ago, because Alysia Yeoh— Barbara Gordon’s new roommate—…
Hahahaha!
Speaking of food adventures in Singapore…every time we go, our hosts take us on amazing food adventures. It’s always lovely, chilli crab by the river, or Katong Laksa, you know, great stuff.
But this last time we went, the event was partially sponsored by the Singapore Tourism Board. Lovely people, and they kept taking us, and other comics peeps like Matt Fraction and C.B. Cebulski to these wonderful restaurants, very elegant places by some of Singapore’s foodie elite. Every event had major food elements, over and over, we were getting really REALLY a bit food fatigued.
Finally, the newspaper, the Straits Times, right? They did a ‘food tour,’ with the Tourism board. They loaded up a bus with all the comics guests, and they took us on a food tour that took almost THE ENTIRE DAY.
Seriously, the idea was to take us to restaurant after restaurant, food stall after food stall, and film it, and do stories about it. I guess the idea was to film us in as many local landmarks as possible, foodwise.
It was endless. The food was amazing, but even eating two BITES of every one of those places was way, way too much. It was some of my favorite stuff, but by the end, we were doing our best to even look polite as we nibbled tiny little bites, every one of us was stuffed to the brim. But we wanted to be nice for our hosts who had set all this up, and for the restaurant owners who were being so gracious.
It was literally like, get some laksa at a Katong shop, eat two bites, get up, go to a Laksa shop across the street, do the same thing, back on the bus, go get white pepper crab, eat two bites, get up…this went on for HOURS, while being photographed the whole time. :) It was one of those things…okay, we are going to serve you the world’s best food, but we’re going to serve it in a million locations over a whole day, and film you, until you can’t even WALK straight!
The very last place was a place that made some sort of local egg desert. It was upstairs in a food pavilion, and we were all barely able to walk we were so full and tired. But the stall owner, who was famous for her deserts, had stayed open to wait for us (we arrived late). The thought of egg deserts after hours and hours of food was just unbearable, but she was so sweet and had waited and made these special for us. What could we do? We ate them, and they were delicious.
And then we all went back to our hotels and went into a food coma. I kid you not, I ate almost nothing for THREE FULL DAYS following!
Singapore likes to feed their guests, that’s all I’m saying! :)
It was memorable, I’ll remember it forever, and it was a complete embarrassment of riches. Nicest people anywhere, honestly. But MAN ALIVE THAT WAS A LOT OF FOOD.
