Girls Do TOO Read Comics, Goddammit
And don’t let anyone tell you different.
There’s a huge wasteland of people who choose to be either uninformed or in denial. It’s time to wake them up. Make your voice heard. Comment. Write letters. Say what you support and what you don’t. Blog, tweet, tumblr, it all fights the tide. It’s not just for us. It’s not just for you. It’s for the next generation of little girls who might very much like to see Batgirl kicking thugs in Gotham or Spider-man and Black Cat trading snappy banter on a rooftop. We have that thing we love, comics, even when sometimes it feels like it doesn’t love us back. I want my niece to be able to read comics without people who should know better saying, “comics are just for boys.”
I’m sorry if this offends those people.
Wait, no I’m not.
We’re here, there’s a lot more of us than you think. Better get used to it.
Or better yet, open your eyes and see what female fandom adds to the hobby. The cosplayers, the critics, the commentators, the fanficcers, the aspiring artists and writers…do you really want to look around at your next convention and see only one gender?
No?
Then quit perpetuating a self-made myth that no one with any brains cares about any more.
Thank you!
