From Wonder Woman #44. Art by the lovely Nicola Scott. Credit for the photo. ;)
This is a fantastic panel and it was a good end to Nicola Scott’s and Gail Simone’s run on Wondy, but one thing: the brunette next to Diana is actually her mother, Hippolyta. She played a huge role in Gail’s run, Donna and Cassie sadly less so ( I think they had Donna over at Titans and Cassie at Teen Titans at the time? ).
Totally minor thing, but Hippolyta’s tag can always use love, especially the preboot kind.
Nicola was dying to draw Wonder Woman, it was something she’d wanted to do forever, and my run was ending, so she wanted to get in on it, bless her. She nailed it, just did amazing work…a family emergency meant that she couldn’t do all the pages, which were written specifically for her, and that’s always a regret, but the gentleman who filled in did a magnificent job and even matched her style pretty nicely.
This book has one of my favorite sentences I’ve ever written (spoilers!).
When the aliens are attacking Washington and destroying it, Hippolyta shows up on her pegasus and with an army of Amazons and yells out…
“Amazons…
…DEFEND.”
My favorite ever. I miss Hippolyta so much!
