Today is the birthday of one of the finest artists and collaborators and friends I have ever worked with, Aussie native NICOLA SCOTT.
She draws like the wind. She has so much passion and love for art and for drawing comics that she automatically makes even bad scripts better, and good scripts transcendent.
She has ideas, she is fearless, you can ask her to draw anything and she DOES it. And better than you could have hoped for, as well.
She is fierce about putting marginalized people in her comics, and she does the research. She might be the best at drawing faces since Kevin Maguire.
Just by EXISTING at all, she demolishes any possible argument that females can’t draw superhero comics, simply by virtue of working harder and DRAWING BETTER than anyone else on the field.
Other artists are in awe of her, writers fight over working with her, and she is my dear friend and holy CRAP, I love this woman.
An example of her dedication…she wanted to draw comics. But in Australia, there was little opportunity to even meet comics people, let alone get work. So she scrimped and saved, and lived in absolute poverty (REAL poverty, not the glamorous kind) to make it to SDCC. She worked hard, really hard, she stood in line for ten seconds talking to an editor. And when they gave her advice, she would go home and rework her entire portfolio, year after year. She wouldn’t give up. In the end, she won.
Greg Rucka and I noticed her work at the same time. She had a beautiful Wonder Woman pin-up online on some website and we both fell in love with it. We both contacted her (independently) and we both asked to see more work.
From then, neither of us would shut up about her. I begged my editor to look at her work (for the record, this NEVER works—editors like to discover talent themselves), and he did, and, at San Diego, he hired her on the spot, for BIRDS OF PREY. Bless you, Mike Carlin!
And you shoulda been a little quicker, Greg Rucka! ;)
If you have met her, you already love her. If you only know her work, and have any sense at all, you know she’s one of the absolute best in the business.
YOU ROCK, SIS!
I would love to see Tumblers post their favorite Nicola Scott art today, with the tag nicolascott, so we can all re-enjoy this master artist’s work!
