Video Game Query

What was the last video game you were obsessed with, and what was it about that game that kept you hooked?

I am asking just out of some curiosity regarding the changing nature of storytelling.

  1. lady-toyano said: Persona 4 bc it bought up many issues dealing with sexuality, public perception, and gender in a clever and quirky way. It also has great gameplay and options… I like my main characters to have options that impact the game when talking to folks.
  2. darkdreamer702 said: Bioshock. The world is so beautiful, in the way that a ruin is beautiful, and the story line is pretty compelling. Portal 2 for the same reasons, and Batman:Arkham City, although I wasn’t happy with ending, but not for the reasons you’d think.
  3. tessn9ne said: Paper Mario: the thousand year door. I generally SUCK at video games and lack any kind of coordination. This game was easy for me to play and generally just fun. The jokes in the story were awesome. it’s one of 3 games i’ve played in its entirety.
  4. soircitte said: Kingdom Hearts.
  5. kevindrakewriter said: Wow this is a harder question then I thought it would be. this is my third attempt to answer this question. World of Warcraft and Soul Calibure 3 were the last two games I was crazy about. I like exploring and solving puzzles. but like fighting too.
  6. delphiburke said: I still can’t shake my Mass Effect & Dragon Age obsession.
  7. pristinely-ungifted said: Definitely Dragon Age: Origins. The part of the story that appealed most to me was the tragic fate of all Gray Wardens. But I was also completely mesmerized by the world’s history.
  8. daniellelavigne said: The Assassin’s Creed series has me pretty obsessed. Particularly the Ezio story. Exploring the Renaissance in a game is amazing.
  9. x-beni-o2-x said: Resident Evil 0. The story, the gameplay, knowing that whatever you did would be futile but trying anyways, a great series.
  10. wessmithwrites said: bioshock.
  11. thomwade said: Infamous and Infamous 2 have probably been my favorite games of the last couple years. I just really like the concept and you get to do cool super-hero things.
  12. foxhack reblogged this from gailsimone and added:
Batman: Arkham City. I dunno, I guess it...story ended. Hint:
  13. thresholdtoinsanity said: Super Metroid. I’m not sure why exactly I love it so much… the biggest reason is probably that I’m sick of the half-assed attempts at storytelling we get nowadays, and Super Metroid concentrates purely on its great gameplay.
  14. retro-nouveau reblogged this from gailsimone and added:
Obsession: Fallout 3 & Fallout 3 New Vegas....the most meaningful interactions with other...
  15. cardboardbubble said: The walking dead game. But I do wonder if I still cared if all episodes were on time. the game is more of a interactive movie. except for the scary stuff. expect difficult life treathing decisions.
  16. oldmanyellsatcloud said: Sadly, not a lot of video games are there yet. Though some excellent people examine writing in games, check out this episode: penny-arcade.com/patv/ep…
  17. benpaddon said: Portal 2 was the last game I played with story and dialogue that didn’t make me want to pull my eyes out. Valve really get storytelling in video games. No one else seems to quite have a handle on it.
  18. wolfsbanesego said: Hmm…the last few were Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Batman: Arkham City, and Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2. Extra information always makes me enjoy the world (of the game) and game more, and I always like twists on classic stories.
  19. heartofnines said: I’m going to echo a lot of people here and say Skyrim and the Mass Effect series. I also love the Halo franchise.
  20. oyveyzqueer said: oh god, the mass effect series for sure. I’m on my third play-through of the trilogy and I’m still in love with the characters and universe.
  21. carnivaloftherandom said: Avengers Alliance on FB. As a casual gamer, it’s both simple to navigate and has a comic-like narrative, that is very enjoyable. And I can’t turn myself upside-down as in console games. I also love Rock Band (former music major.)
  22. rainbowsburningstars said: last game i was really into was final fantasy 12. I would spend two or three days playing nonstop but then I would take a 2-3 week break because I was afraid of becoming obsessed.
  23. kelseighn said: Probably Arcanum IV, and to be honest I’m not really sure what really grabbed me about it. Maybe simply that for an old-school-style game, it was quite well written and put together, and the game mechanics were actually pretty fun.
  24. shaolinsuckerpunch said: Arkham City. Really good video games based on comics are rare and had a reputation for being bad. So to have one done so well with an exceptional story was a treat. And it was Batman! What’s not to love about playing as Batman?
  25. saturnsrings said: It was a Midway game called Gaunlet Dark Legacy. It’s an old to hack and slash game that I’ve loved since I was in my early teens.

  28. mijngedachten said: Bf3. Love that game.
  29. lancelot622 said: Mass Efect 2, the visuals and the build up of the story, together with the characters and the music. It’s just a complete package. The same holds for Max Payne 3, even though it’s short

  34. iffygeneia said: Dragon Age: Origins. Why? Decisions felt like they had a real impact on the story. Also, complex companions who each had a background story that was fascinating to explore. And they were funny :D

Bastion was definitely on my list, for a lot of the same reasons as Sabie. Everything in the game was perfectly designed...
  36. gunsbooksandelectrons said: Most recent game to lock me in on story alone was Bioshock.
  37. sidian said: World of Warcraft, mostly due to the sheer amount of lore and all the different ways to explore it: through quests, dungeons or roleplaying with other players.
  38. teen---idle said: Arkham City b/1 )Batman 2)you get to BE batman (and the stealth missions are so much fun!) 3)great storyline and attention to detail
  39. audiblehush said: Mass Effect/Dragon Age. Player choice/character customization can make the experience really personal, or allow you to role play characters vastly different from yourself. Also, the in-depth character conversations.
  40. mani-in-the-mirror said: Tales of Graces f. The story wasn’t nearly as good as previous Tales games, but the characters were excellent and the in-game character growth was so real that it just made those characters even more loveable and addicting.
  41. jemeryl said: Probably Mass Effect 2… I must’ve played that game 3 or 4 times in a row. FemShep was badass whether you played her Renegade or Paragon and the characters were mostly great. Even the ones who were average had awesome side missions.
  42. this-is-snowman said: LA Noire, definitely! The gameplay, the storyline, everything! Most of the cases are based on the Elizabeth Short case, which makes it intriguing as the real case was never solved.
  43. alchemyprime said: … It’s always a Zelda game for me. I have to finish them. I think the last BIG one was Twilight Princess. I could finish Portal 2 in two days; Twilight Princess took a few weeks to get everything. Though… White Knight Chronicles did it too.
