Over the past few weeks I have heard about more and more cosplayers receiving unwelcome negative press from people. It’s to these people that I address right now.
If you feel that a cosplayer is overrated, copying someone, a bit “whoreish”, not a real nerd or any of the other usual, ill…
I will be more succinct.
If you feel the urge to attack someone you don’t even know for daring to cosplay for their own enjoyment, please stifle that urge by sticking your head in a tub of boiling water until it passes.
Your comment will not be missed.
This is exactly what happened to me earlier this month when I cosplayed Power Girl at STGCC….I actually had a little row with some people on a popular Singaporean forum, not because they thought my costume was bad- as a cosplayer you learn to take that kind of crticism- but more for attacking me as a person, calling me cheap and slutty and whoring for photographer attention, and one person even doubted I actually read comic books. After I tried to defend myself, they thought I was an internet troll and I was asked to prove I was really ‘the Power Girl cosplayer that showed up at STGCC’, by taking a realtime photo of myself holding up a piece of paper stating the date and the name of the forum.
One person asked me to list down the comics I read just to test if I was really into comic books. After identifying myself, some posted lewd comments, like “hey sexy mama I want to take photos of you” “hey honey let’s go out sometime” etc and some after finding out I was Malaysian, kept saying “here’s another Malaysian” “Another one”, etc.
The whole thing wasn’t even about cosplay anymore it was about me. I don’t know what I did to deserve it.
Herebegeeks.com wrote an article about it even.
Well, that is horrible.
I am so, so sorry.
