thewynne asked: About Asians in comics, how would you rate Ryan Choi? My experience with the Atom comes mostly from the animated series (by which I mean TBATB), but he seems to at least be a good example of an Asian hero who isn't automatically a master of kung-fu or some such.

Well, I created the character, and specifically, I wanted his fighting to come from his mother, who was a gymnast. So his fighting is mostly acrobatic.  He was in fact, in canon, a terrible martial arts student, the worst in his class. He did get better, but it was never going to be his strength.

I also just felt acrobatics fit his power set more, in a more entertaining way.

I make no bones about it, I love Ryan. Whenever I do events in Asian countries (or Calgary, where there’s a huge Asian readership), Ryan’s return is the number one thing I am asked for, without question, by miles. There was a group of women in Singapore who cried, literally cried, every time they talked about him.

This stuff, it’s important. I get why some people don’t think so.

But they’re wrong. Visibility is IMPORTANT.
